Back to Basics Bluegrass Band

Gene Groves Guitar
Brian Daniels Mandolin
Eben Greenleaf Banjo
Jim Warren Dobro
Bernie Coombs Bass

Performing Area: New England
This is the general performing area of this band.
They may perform in other areas as well.

Back to Basics is an very popular, award-winning band based in the mid coast Maine area. The band specializes in traditional and original bluegrass music, with emphasis on solid vocal harmonies and, above all, having a good time.
Reminiscent of the early days of bluegrass music, The Back to Basics stage show incorporates the use of a single microphone. The resulting sound and choreography adds a dimension to the show that audiences seem to thoroughly enjoy.
Above all, Back to Basics is committed to keeping bluegrass music alive and well while having a good time in the process. One does not have to spend much time with these guys to realize that they genuinely enjoy one another's company on and off the stage. They all love what they do and are definitely not plastic-- what you see is what you get! Their antics, whether on stage or while "field picking", leave their audiences wondering- what will these guys think of next?

Gene Groves is the lead singer and guitarist from Brunswick, Maine who personifies the idea that you don't have to be from the south to have bluegrass music in your veins. Gene is a good example of a musician who eats, sleeps and breathes the music.

On the mandolin is Brian Daniels, a prolific songwriter of Brunswick. Brian is one of the best of the new breed of songwriters in bluegrass music. "Songbird", co-written with Seth Sawyer, is the title track for the Gibson Brothers' hit CD "Spread Your Wings". Brian writes a large number of songs performed by Back to Basics.

Eben Greenleaf of Westport Island, Maine is the man on the five string banjo. He has a unique and traditional playing style (you have to hear him to understand how the words "unique" and "traditional" can be used in the same sentence to describe his playing). Eben is without a doubt the jolliest, best natured banjo player in New England.

Jim Warren plays the old style of dobro that made "Bashful Brother Oswald" famous and is committed to keeping this style alive. He also mixes in the Josh Graves style when appropriate. Jim is one of the finest dobro players in the northeast. Jim lives in Ludlow, Vermont.

Bernie Coombs of Brunswick plays the upright acoustic bass and does a fine job of providing the beat that keeps the band together and on time. Bernie's flair for comedy keeps fans in stitches on and off the stage.
