When you go to a bluegrass festival in the Midwest for the first time, you never know what to expect from the regional lineup. But if you have the good fortune to see and hear a bluegrass band with the strange name of "Possum Trot," sit back in your lawn chair and take a listen. Possum Trot is a four piece contemporary Bluegrass Band from Queen City Missouri with current members Ed Long, Mary Long, Emily Long, and Hal Cottrell. Possum Trot has been pleasing crowds in the Mid-West and beyond for the past 25 years. Performing original, current, and older material. They have played music for many state and county fairs, Burlington Steamboat Days, Midwest Old Thrashers Reunion in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Worlds of Fun, Ernest Tubbs Record Shop, and Silver Dollar City in Branson. They have to their credit radio and television appearances, as well as six recorded projects. Their current recording, Blue Heart, is schedule for release during the spring of 2004.
Ed Long sings lead, baritone, and low tenor for the band, as well as writes many of the songs the band does. He is considered one of the finest banjo pickers on the Midwest bluegrass circuit. His playing is smooth and clean and adds drive to the groups sound. Ed does most of the MC work for the band, and you never know when he will tell you some tall tale.
Mary Long sings both tenor and baritone, and is an accomplished bass player. She along with Ed co-founded the group back in the mid 70s. Her timing is precise keeping the band in a perfect rhythm. When she joins in on harmony with Ed and Emily, you will hear sweetest sound of family vocals.
Emily Long is the daughter of Ed and Mary. She started singing with the band at age three. Now, at 18, is recognized as a well-seasoned member providing both tasteful lead and harmony vocals. Emily is fast becoming known for her strong rhythm guitar work. She recently won the 2004 Midwest SPBGMA Contemporary Female Vocalist of the Year. Her first to efforts at song writing was so good, that the band decided to include them on the upcoming project.
Hal Cottrell rounds out the group with mandolin and vocals. Born and raised playing music in West Virginia, Hal now resides in Bellevue, Nebraska where he is a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force. In addition to his phenomenal mandolin work, Hal also writes songs that the band performs. Hal was nominated for SPBGMA 2004 Mid-West Mandolin Performer of the year.
Possum Trot delivers a good, solid, down-home style of bluegrass music straight from the hills of Missouri.
