In a world of changing music, The Southern Reign Band stands on tradition. Traditional style bluegrass with a fresh new sound that can only be accomplished by seasoned musicians.
Southern Reign is a four piece band consisting of Cindie Weldon, guitar, lead and harmony vocals; John Purk, on mandolin; Karla Damm, on bass, lead and harmony vocals; Jimmy Campbell on banjo, lead and harmony vocals.
The strong leads and smooth harmonies blend well with the solid, hard-driving, sound these musicians produce.
Each of the four band members
have been playing bluegrass since childhood and each brings his own ideas
and expertise into the group. The band does a wide variety of songs. However,
all the music has a distinctively traditional sound with a little "New
Flavor" sprinkled in.
Cindie Weldon:
Raised in a musical family,
Cindie is no stranger to bluegrass. At age 6 she began playing guitar and
singing along with her Dad and Uncle. She soon joined their band "Fox River
Grass" and began to develop the strong lead voice that carries the Southern
Reign band today. Cindie does the majority of lead vocals for the band
and adds a strong, rock solid guitar style. Bluegrass Unlimited calls her
"soulful, with a touch of Ricky Skaggs-style inflection in her voice".
John Purk:
A mandolin phenomenon! Also
playing since childhood, John has a style that's smooth and effortless.
He leaves no notes unfilled and nothing to the imagination. Over the past
years, John has played with many excellent bluegrass bands . He has played
all over the nation and comes to The Southern
Reign Band with quite an impressive background in music.
One of his most memorable shows was at the Smithsonian Institute. John's
knowledge of music is outstanding. He is a man of few words, but his musical
ability will leave you astounded
Karla Damm:
On the bass is
Karla Damm, who is new to the Tri-State Bluegrass scene. Born & raised
in Michigan, she arrived in Kansas City area after college to start a career
with Hallmark Cards. In the Kansas City area, she is a regular at the Grand
Emporium’s Rural Grit Happy Hour, where she performs with such groups as
The Hootin’ Annies, Loose Gravel, Cross Town Ramblers, and The Swillhound
Stringband. In addition to bass, she plays French Horn with several Kansas
City area groups.
Jimmy Campbell:
Jimmy Campbell started playing Bluegrass in the Tri-State area at age 11, playing with such bands as The Corder Family, Shortline Grass, and Roger and Janice Maddy. After a 10 year break to raise his family, he’s back at it with a vengeance! On Banjo for Southern Reign, he is also fluent in dobro, guitar, and mandolin. Now living in Kansas City, Jimmy is a pipeliner, when he’s not a Bluegrasser!
